An amazing 1857 republished edition of George Washington' s expense accounts whilst general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Gives a fascinating insight into what was spent on the first armed conflict of this new country. For example the first entry is the purchase of five horses for $239 "to equip me for my journey to the Army at Cambridge - & for the Service I was then going upon having sent my chariot and horses back to Virginia..."
Leather boards with calf spine binding and corners with raised gilt portrait and title of George Washington on front board, marbled end pages. Portrait of Washington, title page pages of accounts with two pages of dedications to the rear. Calf spine split top to bottom, front & rear boards loose, corner calf sections rubbed. Pages with age toning light to moderate throughout. Original owner "William D Ford 1858" inscribed on front end paper. A wonderful insight into the every day workings of an army and its leader.
