Description:This fine hand coloured original antique map of the United States was published in 1854 by Carl Flemming, drawn and engraved by the German cartographer Friedrich H. Handtke.
This is an important map in the development of the western states of the United States. Formed states spread as far west as Iowa. The remaining western regions are separated into territories from Minnesota territory to the Oregon territory from a large misshapen California to the middle Indian Territories now New Mexico and Oklahoma. A great map with much detail.
Carl Flemming ran an important German publishing house in Glogau and Berlin in the middle of the nineteenth century, issuing atlases and separately issued maps like this one. The Germans were very interested in American at this period, with large numbers having emigrated to Texas in the 1840s, and more taking advantage of the opportunities of land and employment by coming to the mid-west and into the west.
