This fine incredibly detailed scarce and important original antique folding map of Australia and New Zealand by John Arrowsmith was engraved in 1841 - dated in the title - and was published by Smith Elder & Co. London, 1841

Background: Extremely detailed map especially along the coasts of both countries but also includes county borders in WA & NSW along with details to the West of Sydney and in area of Port Phillip, soon to be the state of Victoria. Arrowsmith perpetaues the myth of the inland Torrens Sea in SA. List of 14 counties in WA, 19 in NSW and 9 Police Divisons in Van Diemens Land.

John Arrowsmith came from a long line of outstanding London map publishers. His maps of Australia were some of the best and most accurate maps published commercially at that time. He based his information on the latest accounts from many coastal and inland explorers and he was accepted as one of the foremost geographers in regards to Australia. (Ref: Tooley; M&B)
