Claude Delisle (1644-1720)

Profile :
The Delisle (de L’Isle) family followed the French cartographer Sanson as a major influence in the development of French mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th century at a moment when Dutch publishers were finally losing their control of the map trade.

Like Nicholas Sanson , Claude Delisle (the father) was a geographer and historian and has four sons, all of whom made their mark at the time, but Guillaume his eldest son, was the most remarkable member of the family. Said to have drawn his first map at the age of nine he was elected a member of the Academie Royale des Sciences by the time he was twenty-seven; later he was appointed to the highest honor as ` Premier Geographe du Roi’.

In 1700 Guillaume Delisle published the renowned “Atlas de Geographie”, which was reissued in 1707, 1708 and 1718. Between 1730 and 1774 the atlas was again reissued as Atlas Nouveau by Covens and Mortier, Amsterdam.
