This large
beautifully hand coloured original
antique map of the Eastern Mediterranean including Syria
& Lebanon - the land of the ancient Phoenicians - was
first engraved in 1752 and updated in 1780 -
dated in the tile cartouche - was published in Jean-Baptiste Bourguinon
D'Anville's large elephant folio
atlas Atlas Generale.
The Phoenicians
inhabited the region of modern Lebanon and Syria from
about 3000 BC. They become the greatest traders and
the best sailors and navigators of the pre-classical
world. They are also the first people to establish a
large colonial network based on seafaring. In all
these skills they build on the example of their
maritime predecessors, the Minoans of Crete.
These
large maps are hard to find in such good condition
and make fantastic historical reference tools due to the
size and high level of detail as with all D'Anvilles
work.
