This large beautifully
engraved hand coloured original antique map of North America
- with each colonial power in North America represented
with red for the British, green for the French and
yellow for the Spanish, with an obvious bias to the
French - was engraved in 1750 - the date is engraved in the title
cartouche - and was published by Robert Du Vaugondy in his Atlas Universal,
Paris 1757.
First edition of De Vaugondy's large map of North
America with unusual colonial power boundaries.
Georgia and the Carolinas are shown stretching to the
Mississippi. New York & Pennsylvania are ambiguously
left within a huge misrepresentation of the French
Canada. Florida is given to Spain and French Louisiana
stretches from the Gulf into the unknown of North
America west of the Mississippi.
The region east of the Appalachians is referred
to as Chouanous et Cheraquis & extensive detail is given on the
Mississippi Valley Indians, French and English forts. The River systems which drain into the
Mississippi are also of note, along with the Belle
Riviere, which seems to extend from Southern Kansas or
Northern Oklahoma to the west, quite uniquely and
mythically so. The Coast of California still includes Nlle. Albion, Quiviera and the entrance discovered by
Martin d'Augilar. The lands to the north are Terres
Inconnues. The Missouri River extends far into the West.
This is a wonderful map published on the cusp of huge
change in North America both politically and in the
physical understanding of the vast lands yet to be
explored.
