This
large beautifully engraved
hand coloured original antique map of America - showing
California as an Island - was published by Gerard Valck
in 1695.
This is an important map trying to define the countries
and regions then owned by the many European powers
laying claim to the Americas, such as France, England,
Holland etc.
This is a reasonably scarce map with only 7 records of
sales since 1994 with the highest price of $4600 paid in
2006.
This rather
uncommon map of the Americas - with the unusual
inclusion of two pictorial cartouches one for North &
South America.
California is shown as an Island with an indented
northern coast based on the earlier Nicolas Sanson
model, different only by the inclusion of three place
names in Southern California: S. Isidoro, Gigante and N
S del la Guadalupe.
The title cartouche
conveniently hides Terra Esonis Incognita that stretches
out towards Asia and the Fretum Anian separates it from
California. (Ref: Tooley; M&B)
